Ruotsinkielinen koulu sijoittuu kulttuurihistoriallisesti arvokkaaseen ja suojeltuun Käpylään. Sijainti kaupunkikuvallisessa solmukohdassa kunnioittaa alueen perinteistä henkeä, mutta tuo paikalle samalla hienovaraista uutta identiteettiä. Pohjolankadun näkymän päätteeksi, Meurmanin puiston laidalle nouseva koulu luo alueelle uuden maamerkin, jonka katujulkisivu noudattaa 1950-luvun suojeltujen asuinrakennusten rytmiä ja mittakaavaa.

Kolmeen sakaraan jakautuva massa luo ympärilleen polveilevaa ja suojaisaa pihatilaa välitunteja varten. Rakennuksen pääaula avautuu lasiseinäisenä paviljonkina yläpihalle ja sitä ympäröivään korkeaan mäntymetsään. Alueen aikakaudelle tyypillinen harjakatto näyttäytyy kadun suuntaan yhtenäisenä lappeena, kun taas pihan puolella se jakautuu kolmeen erilliseen osaan.

Julkisivun punertava, läpivärjätty betoni jatkaa Käpylän tunnusomaista värimaailmaa. Elementtijako on häivytetty pystysuuntaisella urituksella, joka soinnuttaa rakennuksen yhteen alueen vanhojen betonisokkeleiden kanssa. Ylempien kerrosten materiaalina on käytetty paikalla muurattua vaaleaa tiiltä. Tiilen sävyinen, kevyesti levitetty saumalaasti tekee pinnasta lähes rapatun oloisen, johon muurareiden kädenjälki tuo elävyyttä ja vivahteita.

Sisätilojen arkkitehtuurin ytimessä on koillispuolen mäntyinen kalliorinne, joka on vahvasti läsnä kaikissa kerroksissa. Luonnonvalo ja vaihtuvat maisemat ovat olennainen osa koulun avaraa tunnelmaa. Rakennuksen yhteisöllinen sydän on ravintolasali, jonka monikäyttöiset tilat palvelevat asukastoimintaa myös koulupäivien jälkeen.

The school is situated in the culturally and historically significant, protected district of Käpylä. Its position at a key urban focal point respects the traditional spirit of the area while subtly introducing a fresh identity. Rising at the terminus of the Pohjolankatu street view, adjacent to Meurman Park, the school creates a new local landmark. Its street-facing facade carefully observes the rhythm and scale of the surrounding protected 1950s residential buildings.

The building’s mass is divided into three wings, creating a sheltered, meandering courtyard for outdoor activities. The main lobby opens as a glass-walled pavilion toward the upper yard and the surrounding forest of towering pines. Characteristic of the local architecture, the pitched roof presents a unified plane toward the street, while on the courtyard side, it breaks into three distinct parts.

The facade’s reddish, through-colored concrete continues Käpylä’s signature color palette. Vertical grooving conceals the joints between the precast elements, harmonizing the new structure with the historic concrete plinths of the neighborhood. The upper floors feature site-laid light brickwork. A tinted mortar, thinly applied over the masonry, creates a nearly plastered appearance where the visible craftsmanship of the masons adds texture and subtle nuances to the expansive surfaces.

At the heart of the interior architecture is the pine-covered rocky slope to the northeast, which maintains a strong presence across all floors. The natural landscape and shifting light are integral to the school’s airy and luminous atmosphere. The dining hall serves as the communal heart of the building—a versatile space designed to support local community activities well beyond school hours.Helsinki, Finland
