Twisting panoramic stair guiding the visitor experience of the new Sara Hildén Art Museum

Competition 2021
Tampere, Finland
5700 m²

The new Sara Hildén Art Museum stands out as a tall landmark in the corner of Wilhelm von Nottbeck´s park setting a new layer to the historical Finlayson red brick area and forming a new square in front of the museum. The careful placement of the museum retains the historical view between Finlayson´s palace and the old headquarter allowing the linden trees to be preserved along Finlaysoninkatu. The twisting main stair is cut with glass facades to the white brick building volume creating an exciting urban element in the cityscape and offering panoramic views towards the city, the park and Näsijärvi lake.

The cafeteria, shop and auditorium are situated on the ground floor with openings to the park. The visitor experience to the art galleries is defined by a loop of two stairs connecting the sequence of various spaces on four floors. The highight of the visitor experience is the descent from the top floor via the panoramic stair.
